Little Known Black History Fact: Georgetown’s Slavery History

Published by:

Last week, Georgetown University made amends with the descendants of 272 slaves it sold in 1838 to relieve the school of a debt. The leader of Jesuit order that founded the institution spoke with over 100 descendants and offered an apology that was months in the making.

Back in September, the school made its first official step in addressing its role in the slave trade. The slaves were owned by the Maryland Jesuits. They were sold by two priests and former presidents of the school, the Rev. Thomas Mulledy and the Rev. William McSherry for a price of $115,000, equal to over $3 million in our time. Many of the slaves were sold to a Louisiana businessman while others were reportedly sold to a widow of a slave trader.

Rev. Tim Kesicki, president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, led the April 18 ceremony, a day after the Emancipation Day holiday celebration in Washington and two days after Easter Sunday. Descendants who felt rebuffed when Georgetown University first announced plans to make the formal apology were given room to speak.

“Penance is very important,” said Sandra Green Thomas, president of the GU272 Descendants Association. “Penance is required when you …read more

It seems like the man who brought you ‘Bump and Grind’ just can’t stay out of trouble when it comes to his alleged sex life. A Mississippi man claims that R. Kelly has been having an affair with his wife and is suing him under the state’s alienation of affection law.

WAPT.com reports:

Kenny Bryant, who works as a deputy with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, filed the lawsuit against Kelly on April 21 in circuit court.

In the lawsuit, Bryant claims that his wife, Asia Childress, had a romantic relationship with Kelly prior to their July 15, 2012 wedding but told him that it had ended. Bryant said the relationship with Kelly rekindled when his wife attended a Kelly concert in October 2012.

Sometime afterward, Bryant said his wife convinced him to move to Atlanta to further her career. Bryant said he quit his job and moved, but believes her underlying motive was to continue her affair with Kelly, according to the lawsuit.

Bryant was unable to find “profitable employment” in Atlanta, which resulting in financial ruin for him, the lawsuit said.

Ben Carson Says He Wants More Private Sector Partners For HUD

Published by:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said Wednesday he expects to release a policy agenda within the next few months that delivers “bang for the buck,” partly by encouraging more private-sector collaboration.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Carson said he expects to advance public-private partnerships, extending low-income housing tax credits and providing more opportunities for public-housing residents to get jobs at the buildings where they live.

“The biggest tools are the partnerships — public, private, nonprofit and faith community partnerships — which allow us to leverage those federal dollars, anywhere from 2, 3, 4, 5 to 20-to-1,” Carson said.

He said businesses with a financial stake in such projects are motivated to maintain the surrounding infrastructure.

“And if they’re maintaining it, we don’t have to — and then we can spend more time and effort dealing with the things that really need to be dealt with,” he said.

Carson has been traveling the country gathering input from agency field staff, local leaders and residents of public housing developments.

His three-day visit to Ohio, the tour’s fourth stop, included visits to developments in both urban and rural areas.

Carson declined to comment during a later news conference on the tax plan …read more
